When I came out of my narcissistic relationship I realized that even though I was thousands of kilometers away from my ex-wife, I still could hear her talking inside my head. It was not long before I realized that I almost believed that those demeaning, demotivating, criticizing, and mostly hurtful monologues were my inner voice. But in fact, they were not.


We tend to adopt the voice of our abuser as our inner voice and begin to abuse ourselves unconsciously, just how we were abused.


Have you noticed your inner voice/self-talk/inner monologue lately?


If not, then take a moment and answer these questions:


  • Is your inner self-talk kind and motivating towards you?
  • Does your inner voice show love and compassion towards you?
  • Is your inner monologue positive?


If the answer is no, you do have negative self-talk.


Negative self-talk can either make you or break you. It has the power to not only put you down but also to keep you down forever and make healing impossible.


With my experience being an abuse recovery expert, I have noticed that people tend to adapt to their abuser's tone and style as their inner voice. They fail to notice that the inner voice is not theirs and is not as loving and caring as it should be.


The same thing happens in your childhood too, when you develop your inner voice by listening to your primary caregiver. If the caregiver was a loving and compassionate person then your inner voice would be loving and caring, and if the primary caregiver was a criticizing, blaming, and emotionally unavailable person towards you then your inner voice would be exactly like that.


Unfortunately, we believe that our inner voice is who we are and we begin to trust it blindly. But we can consciously reprogram our inner voice to become more loving, caring, motivating, and compassionate. After all, this is the key to living a good life and raising your self-worth.
